THE HAGUE – Sa isang libro, ibinahagi ng Pinay politician na si Maya Butalid na naka-base sa The Netherlands, ang kanyang mga karanasan at aral mula sa kanyang pagiging aktibista, social worker, politiko at breast cancer survivor.
Chasing Windmills ang pamagat ng kanyang libro. Hango ang pamagat sa nobelang Don Quixote ni Miguel de Cervantes.
Isang kwento ng pakikipaglaban ng bida sa windmills na inakala niyang mga higante. Pero ang “windmills” na sinagupa ni Butalid ay ang mga pagsubok na kanyang hinarap sa buhay. Sa librong ito binuksan niya ang kanyang buhay at binalikan ang mga hindi malilimutang karanasan.
Bilang suporta, inorganisa ng Philippine embassy at University of the Philippines Alumni Association–The Netherlands ang isang book reading event.
Sinimulan ang libro sa kuwento noon si Butalid ay student activist pa lang sa University of the Philippines noong panahon ng Martial Law ni Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., hanggang sa mapadpad siya at kanyang asawa sa The Netherlands noong 1983 bilang miyembro ng National Democratic Front of the Philippines.
Makalipas ng ilang taon, tumiwalag si Butalid sa NDFP.“Politics
is personal, you should walk the talk and I find it personally
important that leaders should walk the talk. It’s a process, my respect,
my regard for the party diminished,” sabi ni Butalid, may-akda ng Chasing Windmills.
Sa sumunod na kabanata ng kanyang buhay, naging miyembro naman siya ng Labor party (PVDA) sa The Netherlands, kung saan pitong taon siyang naupong councilor sa Tilburg, isa sa pinakamalaking lungsod ng The Netherlands.
Hinawakan niya ang portfolio on women, migration at social integration.
“How
I grappled in finding my way to the Dutch society. Learning the
language, having a diploma, actively participating in this society, but
at the same time not losing a bit of being a Filipino,” wika ni Butalid.
Ibinahagi rin niya ang karanasan sa pagpapalaki ng mga anak sa isang multi-cultural environment.
“This conversation with Ligaya made me realize that living in a mixed culture need not be problematic or rather, it can be enriching to one’s life,” sabi ni Butalid.
Pero ang pinamalaking hamon sa kanyang buhay ay nang ma-diagnose siya ng breast cancer. Sa huli, pinili ni Butalid na mag-focus sa buhay. Cancer survivor na siya ngayon.
Ayon kay Philippine Honorary Consul Eppo Horlings, ito ang kauna-unahang libro na sinulat ng isang Pinay o Asyano sa The Netherlands na sumasalamin sa karanasan ng maraming migrante.
“This book proves that an activist is a normal human body, who likes to make the best of it. So I hope your publisher will take the risk to translate it in Dutch,” sabi ni Horlings.
Umani rin ng papuri ang libro ni Butalid sa University of Amsterdam.
“Despite the divergence, there were moments while reading that I could relate so much. I forgot that those were not my own words and those were not my own thoughts,” wika ni Dr. Chei Billedo, assistant professor, University of Amsterdam.
“You can learn as well how the perseverance or determination of a woman like Maya becomes a leader,” sabi ni Dr. Cynthia Bejeno, social anthropologist.
“She
continues to inspire people by her stories. Her stories are her
personal stories of her struggle as a mother, as a migrant here, having
her voice heard,” wika ni Atty. Flor Almodiel, pangulo ng UPAA-NL.
Sa ngayon, abala si Butalid sa council of refugees at tumutulong sa mga mahihirap na Dutch, kapwa migrante at asylum seekers.
“By sharing my life experiences and the hurdles I underwent, I hope you can also recognize it and get inspiration and insights from that,” dagdag ni Butalid.
Bagamat kuwentong buhay ni Butalid ang libro, naging social commentary na rin ito sa lipunang ginagalawan ng mga Pilipino at Dutch. Nagsisilbing gabay din ang kwento ni Butalid para sa mga migrante na humaharap sa iba-ibang hamon ng buhay.
